This has got to be one of my favorites. The dunes shift and settle over the Tularosa Basen and cover over 275 square miles. It was cold most days I was here 25-45 degrees and the last day it was windy also. The wind moves the dunes, when we were here last the dunes were close to the visitor center and now they are over 1/4 mile away. As the dunes move they leave behind area that soon fill in with plants. The hikes I did over the four days I was here were often repeated but I never got tired of them. (Dunes Life Nature Trail, Playa trail, the Interdune boardwalk, the backcountry camping trail, Alkali flat trail) If you get a chance this is a must see.

Day 1 before I got into the dunes

Day one hike, 8-9 pictures stitched together

One picture does not do this justice

Yuccas grow as the sand covers them

Amazing how plants adapt

Taking picture of camera

wind

Beware

This is not flat

you need water

so vast

So Quiet

See how tall the dunes are

Quiet

I walked as far as you can see

You feel alone

Gives you and idea of the dunes

Vast and moving

Plants start growing

The wind blew the sand away

Black and White

The end of the trail is in sight
